Inherited
Huncoat Hall at the age of 60 in 1588 on the death of his father Oliver. His
first marriage was to Agnes Ormerod, an heiress from Gambleside, whose family
was a branch of the Ormerod family of Worsthorne who had acquired lands at
gambleside in rossendale. This marriage must have helpedthe finances of the
Huncoat family as it is at this time that the east wing was built onto the
house by James (this is referred to as the new house in the inventory of the
will of John, son of James, in 1617. This wing
was an important addition to Huncoat Hall as it contained two further
bedrooms, a new kitchen and larder or dairy section. This would have enabled
the family to have a new kitchen and probably cease preparing food in the
Great Hall. The Chapel, which was also built about this time, opened off the
Great Hall. This would probably have been used by various members of the
Birtwistle family plus other families with Catholic sympathies living in the
village. James
married a second time in 1585 to Emma Hulme, presumably following the death
of his first wife, and they are referred to in the Yorkshire Fines of 1596 in
connection with three cottages and land at Calton and Malham – presumably
property which came into the family via James’s grand-mother Margaret Lowde. James died
at Huncoat Hall in 1597. His wife Emma is mentioned again in the Court Rolls
for 1597 when, shortly after the death of James, is stated as being Emma,
lately widow of James Birtwistle of Huncoat, and is fined 3d for ‘not bringing her
corn to the Kings Mill at Accrington’. |

attended and was awarded his BA degree from Brasenose College Oxford on 26th
October 1564. Following this the next record of his whereabouts was in
Bourton near Buckingham, on land owned by Fernando Poulton as Lord of the
Manor. The reason for him settling in Bourton is unclear but the Poultons
were an old catholic family and Edmund could have been friendly with them
from his Died in
Bourton in 1602. His descendents are largely recorded as in Buckinghamshire
