Ref Dorothy Joan Birtwhistle

Born in Hull on 23.03.1922 she was one of five children - Andrew, Betty, Joan, John & Michelle (Micky). Her father, James M.., served in France during World War 1 – being awarded the “Croix de Guerre” at Verdun in 1916.

After leaving school, she trained as a Nurse at Hilligdon Hospital before transferring to Doncaster Royal Infirmary where she met and subsequently married George Birtwhistle in 1946. Her training and experience as a Nurse proved of significant practical benefit as the wife of a GP in a rural practice – particularly before, and in the early years of, the National Health Service.

In addition to being a loving wife and mother she was a very energetic, active and practical person, involved in numerous local charities and other organisations – and with a talent for crafts such as woodworking & silversmithing.

Pauline adds: “Education was at Partlands PNEU School at age four and a half years old moving on to Ryde House School (run by Dorothy and Irene Birtwhistle).  I have an idea they ran out of money, any way the school closed and I went as a boarder to Tormead, Guildford at the age of about nine.  I became very ill whilst here and after a year left and after two terms with a tutor I finished my schooling (the senior school years) at St Therese Presentation Convent in Ryde.  I did a year's secretarial course at the Isle of Wight Technical College 1960/61.  I wanted to follow family tradition and join the medical profession as a nurse but Dad said I had to get out in the world and earn so that was it!”
