Ref Dorothy Joan Birtwhistle

Born in Hull on 23.03.1922 she was one of five children - Andrew, Betty, Joan, John & Michelle (Micky). Her father, James M.., served in France during World War 1 – being awarded the “Croix de Guerre” at Verdun in 1916.

After leaving school, she trained as a Nurse at Hilligdon Hospital before transferring to Doncaster Royal Infirmary where she met and subsequently married George Birtwhistle in 1946. Her training and experience as a Nurse proved of significant practical benefit as the wife of a GP in a rural practice – particularly before, and in the early years of, the National Health Service.

In addition to being a loving wife and mother she was a very energetic, active and practical person, involved in numerous local charities and other organisations – and with a talent for crafts such as woodworking & silversmithing.
