Figure 33 James Barnard the Van Diemanís land government printer

In 1836 the arctic explorer John Franklin, whose first wife had been Eleanor Porden, was appointed lieutenant-governor of Van Diemanís Land (Tasmania), and Van Diemanís Land is mentioned inseveral of Annaís letters in the Flaxman collection at the British Library. As an inveterate communicator with her friends, it is possible that Anna played some part in finding positions for her friends. William Kay Porden (William Pordenís son), became the Van Diemanís Land government architect and, on 3rd May 1838, Anna refers to a visit to a young lady resident near Alconbury Hill who intended to go to Van Diemanís Land with her brother, who had obtained a ďconsiderable appointmentĒ there.
