Figure 33 James Barnard the Van Dieman’s land government printer

In 1836 the arctic explorer John Franklin, whose first wife had been Eleanor Porden, was appointed lieutenant-governor of Van Dieman’s Land (Tasmania), and Van Dieman’s Land is mentioned in  several of Anna’s letters in the Flaxman collection at the British Library. As an inveterate communicator with her friends, it is possible that Anna played some part in finding positions for her friends. William Kay Porden (William Porden’s son), became the Van Dieman’s Land government architect and, on 3rd May 1838, Anna refers to a visit to a young lady resident near Alconbury Hill who intended to go to Van Dieman’s Land with her brother, who had obtained a “considerable appointment” there.
