Inherited Huncote Hall after the death of his father Richard in c.1370.. He is recorded on a number of occasions from 1376-1406. The events from 1386-1394 are in the Dunkenhalgh deeds and concern the inheritance of his son Richard. The records from 1401-1406 concern his attanedance at Court as a juror, and finally being excused attendance in 1406 owing to his being over seventy years of age.

Additional:

Recorded as a Chaplain and mentioned in the Court Rolls concerning a case at Westminster in 1366 when he was in dispute with Henry de Shuttleworth over a ‘significant’ piece of land at Aighton near Mitton. This consisted of  a house, a mill plus 80 acres of land, a meadow and a wood at Billington. Henry de Shuttleworth admitted that John had a right to the land, but one year later, John is recorded as releasing it to Simon de Mortley and his wife Ellen.

 

John Birtwhistle, the Chaplain is again mentioned in 1383, 1391 and then in 1409 when passing to Henry de Grimshaw other property & land in Aighton previously gifted to him.

Inherited Huncote Hall on the death of his father, William in 1408. His activities at Huncote hall in the early 1400’s are well recordedwhen he is found developing the estate around Huncote. He took over another house plus 71 acres of land and enclosed 12 acres of  meadaow, a wood and some waste land lying between Huncote & Hapton.

 

In 1425, evidence indicates that he wasfarming on a larger scale and is recorded as being sued for debt by Roger Dickson – and then in turn he sues Henry Brandwood for money owing from the sale of cattle.
