Additional:

James was stated as being 40 years old when succeeding his father James at Huncoat Hall in 1597. He married Dorothy, a daughter of Richard Worthington of Blainscough, Nr Coppull in Lancashire. The Worthingtons were a very prominent Catholic family and Thomas Worthington, a brother of Dorothy, was President of the College at Douay in 1599.

(note: in addition, John Worthington, a nephew of Dorothy, was the first Superior of the Jesuits in Lancashire and was caught hiding at Huncoat Hall in 1641. He was imprisoned at Lancaster Castle and died on parole in 1652).

 

James died in 1617 at Huncoat Hall.

Additional:

George initially settled at Burnley and is recorded as being a churchwarden there in 1622. He later moved to Great Singleton where he died in 1638.

 

There are two Rossendale Manor Court Roll entries referring to the connection between George Birtwistle of Burnley with the family at Huncoat Hall. The first, in 1620, mentions ‘George Birtwistle and Ellen his wife’ when the Gambleside lands, inherited by the family at Huncoat Hall, are being settled among the family after the death of George’s elder brother James in 1617. A later Court Roll entry of 1638 refers to ‘George Birtwistle of Singleton’ surrendering his messuage with barns at Gambleside to John Holt. This record appears just before the death of George in the same year.

The Court records of 1619 show Henry living on this property in 1619 and in 1620 there is a second Court record showing the land being divided between the three bothers George, Henry & Oliver (all sons of James & Agnes).

Robert settled on land at Thorlby, near Skipton (ref map) and was the first member of the family to use the “h” in the spelling of Birtwhistle following its various inclusions in the Parish Registers at Holy Trinity Church, Skipton. His two younger sons, Robert (1600-1639) and Richard (1602-1653), head the families found around Skipton, Kildwick & Bingley over the next 250 years.

 

Died at Thorlby in Dec1624. Buried at Holy Trinity Church, Skipton on 24 Dec 1624.
